ReplyDeleteI'm doing a Road Trip from western IL to Wiggins MS on the 23rd-24th to pick up 12 Russian nucleus colonies.
Last year it was 30 on my 98 F-150.
Cherokee Bees in Al.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the bees. I got into that hobby about seven years ago. I had some success, but more bad luck. I bought Italians three times and caught one swarm and a logger friend of mine cut down an oak loaded with bees. I captured those. I had some colonies leave and one infested with mites and another with hive beetles. I really enjoyed it and will eventually get back into it (might catch a swarm this spring). It is tough and a learning experience. The bees I bought came from Werner's in Cullman. They are a good source of information and supplies. Don't get discouraged if you have bad luck. I know some people who have bought a colony for a backyard hive and have had great results. I figured the honey that I harvested cost me about $750 a quart! LOL! Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteThx bro I'm going in with my eyes wide open.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the info on your supplier. I may give them a try next year, or even this year if they are not sold out. ROAD TRIP !!!!
ReplyDeleteJeffrey: You have to be ULTRA-AGGRESSIVE and pro-active in Mite Treatment...last year I treated 45 colonies FOUR times with: Apistan strips-Formic Acid pads-ApiGuard thymol gel-Oxylic Acid Vapor and fed in the fall.........brought 35 of 45 thru the winter, which is good considering losses here (western IL, the 'bulge' N of St. Louis) are averaging 60-80 %. GOOD LUCK !!!
Thanks Sour Kraut. Those are good survival numbers. Here is the link to Werner's. Besides Apiarian needs they sell beer/wine making supplies, camping equipment, outdoor clothing, specialty beers and wines, etc. I've been trading with Robert for forty plus years. They are good people. I think they start taking bee orders in December, but you better check to be sure.

Kune Kune pigs are pretty cool. Haven't butchered one yet. I've heard that they are the kobi beef of pork. And their grass eaters. They won't root if they have plenty of grazing room. And they will talk to you, very vocal. All of the ones I've been around are suckers for being scratched behind the ears
